The Moroccan Elections - Provisional Results

A month after Islamists won Tunisia's post-revolution election and days before their predicted surge in Egyptian polls, their Moroccan counterparts claimed to have achieved a similar breakthrough without bloodshed. The surge in support for the Islamist PJD raises interesting questions.

The head of Morocco's moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdellah Benkirane, claimed victory on Saturday and, aware of international attention, said he wanted a coalition government to promote democracy and good governance. "The nub of our programme and of those who will govern with us will have a double axis, democracy and good governance," he said. "Today what I can promise Moroccans is that I am going to try, I and the team which will work with me, to be more serious and more rational."

Even with more than 100 seats, the PJD will have to form an alliance with other parties to govern.Analysts said that even if it heads a governing coalition, the party would not be able to impose any programme on the assembly. It would have to appease its coalition partners and the international community on whose investment and tourism the country relies heavily.

The Islamist party's main rivals in the polls were Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi's centre-right Independence party and in third place, the Coalition for Democracy, an eight-party pro-monarchy bloc that includes two of the five governing parties. Though the Coalition for Democracy, led by Finance Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, have amassed roughly the same amount of seats as the Islamists in the preliminary results announced, because they are a coalition, they cannot form government as it is the largest single party that is able to do so.

"The public powers did everything to ensure that this vote was a healthy and transparent democratic moment," Communications Minister Khalid Naciri said after polling stations closed on Friday, adding that "electoral competition was tough".

Provisional interior ministry figures put the turnout at only 45 per cent. Although this is up from 37 per cent from the last parliamentary election in 2007, it is lower than the 51.6 per cent turnout recorded in 2002.Analysts said that a higher voter turnout would have given credibility to the constitutional reform. The low turnout is a blow for the Moroccan establishment and resulted even though the state had saturation television commercials on Friday urging Moroccans to "carry out their national duty" by voting.

Morocco's pro-democracy February 20 protest movement, responsible for the protests staged just before the King announced his plans to reform the constitution, had called on voters to boycott the elections. It will be interesting to see if future analysis shows if the boycott played into the Islamist PJD's gains.

With official results expected on Sunday, PJD parliamentary bloc leader Lahcen Daoudi described the result as an "historic turning point", saying, "The figures which we have say that we will have over 100 seats."

Under the new constitution, if the predicted results are confirmed, King Mohammed VI will have to name a prime minister from the PJD. The PJD's Benkirane acknowledged that his party would have to tailor its programme to appease its coalition partners and the international community."As far as alliances are concerned, we are open to everyone, I have always said that," he said."From now on, Moroccans will feel that the state is at their service and not the other way about. That is very important for us."

At that polling station, at least 16 percent of the ballots were either blank or invalid, often because voters had crossed out every party in protest at the choice.In 2007, 19 percent of ballots were invalid. Analysts are suggesting that if people voted for the bloc of traditional loyalist parties, that would suggest they want to maintain the status quo, while more votes for the PJD would indicate a desire for greater change.

Argan oil is an oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, endemic to Morocco, that is valued for its nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties. The tree, a relict species from the Tertiary age, is extremely well adapted to drought and other environmentally difficult conditions of southwestern Morocco. The species Argania once covered North Africa and is now endangered and under protection of UNESCO.

Argan oil is exceptionally rich in natural tocopherols (vitamin E), rich in phenols and phenolic acid, rich in carotenes, rich in squalene, rich in essential fatty acids, 80% unsaturated fatty acids and depending on extraction method more resistant to oxidation than olive oil.

Argan oil is used for dipping bread, on couscous, salads and similar uses. "Amlou" a thick brown paste with a consistency similar to peanut butter is produced by stone grinding roasted almond and Argan oil and is considered a favorite local bread dip.

The unroasted oil is traditionally used as a treatment for skin diseases, and has found favour with the cosmetics industry. The oil is said to have restorative and age-defying effects and is believed to help all sorts of skin conditions: dry skin, acne, psoriasis, eczema, wrinkles.

The Eleventh Marrakesh International Film Festival

The 11th annual Marrakesh International Film Festival runs from 2nd to 10th December.

The festival jury will vote for the Golden Star for best film, a jury prize and kudos for best actress and actor.

This year's Competition selection includes 15 films from 15 different countries, including 10 titles from first-time directors. Signourney Weaver will also be in town presiding over the Cinecoles Short Film Jury. Several high-profile titles will screen out of competition including David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, Sam Levinson’s Another Happy Day, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Black Gold, Ami Canaan Mann’s Texas Killing Fields, Cristina Comencini’s When the Night, Gerardo Naranjo’s Miss Bala, Faouzi Bensaidi’s Death for Sale and Philippe Lefebvre’s Paris By Night.

The festival will pay tribute to Mexican cinema with several special screenings and will also screen several Moroccan films.

Camel rides are very popular, especially for the kids, and in Marrakech there are several places where it's possible to find a camel ready harnessed and just waiting for a fare.

So, where can I ride a camel in Marrakech? You'll find camels inside the Menara Gardens, also just outside the same Garden on the other side of the road. In the field outside of the medina wall just across from La Mamounia hotel, you'll also find camels available for rides.

If you're heading for Ourika Valley or Imlil for the day, you'll also pass camels along the route. Just ask your driver to stop for 10 minutes!

When the enticing smell of freshly baked bread curls around your nostrils as you walk around the Marrakech medina, you're probably very close to a furan (communal oven).

Most homes in the medina don't have the luxury of an oven, so bread, cakes and other food requiring baking are taken to the local neighbourhood oven.

For 1.5 dirhams for a small loaf, 3 dirhams for a large loaf, the baker will oversee the cooking of each item and store it awaiting collection. Often the job of delivering and collecting the bread and cakes is given to the children.

British Airways to launch flights to Marrakech!

British Airways will launch flights to Marrakech from Gatwick in March 2011 in a move putting it head to head with easyJet on a route BA withdrew from almost three years ago.

The first BA flight will leave on March 27 with departures on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1.05pm. One-way fares start from £79.70 and are available now.

The airline announced the three-times-a-week service on Monday at World Travel Market. BA previously operated to Marrakech through franchise carrier GB Airways, coming off the route in March 2008 after selling the franchise to easyJet.

BA head of UK sales Richard Tams said the service would offer “a real alternative to discerning travellers”. He added: “Unlike the low-cost carriers, we offer fantastic all-inclusive fares with no stealth extras.”

Moroccan National Tourist Office chief executive Hamid Addou said “We’re delighted BA is returning to Morocco and Marrakech. We know there is a strong demand from the UK market for flagship carriers.”

Ramadan is one month a year that all muslims have to honour, it falls in the ninth month of the lunar year.

From when the sun rises, until the sun sets, muslim men and woman can't eat, smoke, use perfume, or have sexual relations. The only people that don't have to follow these rules are the sick, pregnant, travelers, and children. All of these rules are dropped once the sun goes down.

In broad terms, Ramadan hardly affects tourists to Morocco. Offices and banks change their hours slightly and some shops close earlier for the staff to get home and eat their evening meal at sunset. Otherwise, shops and sights that you may want to visit are open as normal. Food and drink (alcoholic or otherwise) is available throughout daylight hours in hotels and tourist restaurants. As a matter of respect, you should not walk in the streets eating, drinking or smoking. Service at Dar Zaman is unaffected during ramadan. You will still be able to eat and drink to your heart's content!

Following Ramadan is Aïd al-Fitr, a three day celebration. During this holiday it is more likely that shops (including the souks, but not restaurants) will be closed, and other services may be disrupted.

Casablanca-Tangier TGV 2015

Morocco’s Railway office (ONCF) has earmarked MAD 20 billion for the Casablanca-Tangier high speed train (TGV) which is due to be operational in 2015.

The new train will reduce travel time between Casablanca and Tangier by half, from 4 hours and 45 minutes to 2 hours and 10 minutes. Construction works will start in June 2010.

There are a couple of places Dar Zaman can recommend for cooking classes in Marrakech. They're both tried and tested by numerous previous guests. Both offer a similar itinerary - shopping in the souks prior to preparing various appetisers and main courses, then cooking and finally eating everything! Our two recommendations are Souk Cuisine and Dar Attajmil. Souk Cuisine has a comprehensive website, Dar Attajmil actually has no reference at all to their cooking classes on their website, but they do exist, and for 50 euros per person. If you're booking to stay at Dar Zaman we can book the classes for you.

The Kasbah du Toubkal is located just 75km from Marrakech (one hour twenty minutes by car), at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. You can come here for lunch and spend a few dreamy hours, or stay for a week and hike in the valleys or even hike to the peak of Mount Toubkal. The scenery is stunning, the warm and welcoming hospitality authentic Berber. With streams, waterfalls and several Berber villages tucked around the sides of the valley, you can explore the area at leisure. The Beldi Country Club is an incredible place, just 15 minutes outside of the Marrakech medina. Dar Zaman can make reservations for you and organise transport to take you there and bring you back. Rustic yet chic, it offers gardens, two stunning swimming and relaxing areas, and a wonderful spa complex offering hammam, massage and a host of treatments. The swimming pools are classy, lined with black tiles instead of the usual blue. One pool is surrounded by ancient olive trees, the other is located beside hotel guest accommodation that was recently added. A day by the pool with a three course lunch will set you back 350 dirhams, plus drinks. There are also a handful of local artisan workshops offering excellent quality pottery items and fabrics.
